4 Apps for a Productive Month of Ramadan

From the outset, I want to clarify that for many people the most productive use of your phone during the blessed month of Ramadan will be… not using it.

Just turn it off and delete all of your most egregious time wasting apps.

That said, in addition to deleting apps, the following list is for those interested in engaging intentionally with their devices; replacing destructive tech vices with productive tech habits:

1. Tarteel

A fantastic tool for Qur’an memorization! The app listens to your recitation and tracks your reading through the pages of the mushaf. Most impressive is the feature that allows you to make a page blank and then have it fill in as you recite— alerting you to any mistakes and retaining the visual feedback of a mushaf even when memorizing.

2. Kalaam

A new app that helps you learn Qur’anic Arabic and increase in your understanding of the Qur’an. At launch, the focus is in on vocabulary— you take a diagnostic test and from there customize how much you want to learn per day. At its core, Kalaam is a robust flashcard system for Qur’anic vocab, with images and examples from the Qur’an. I found its many quality of life features to be well executed and engaging enough to make me want to come back daily. Some examples include visual progress tracking, gamification with points and a leader-board, and prioritizing vocab learning to specific surahs.

3. Structured

A great app for planning out your day and visualizing what tasks need to be completed and at what times. It’s easy to go into the month of Ramadan with ambitious goals about your daily routine, but it’s a lot harder to deliver on those goals without a well thought out plan. With Structured, you can outline where in your busy day you will plan on committing to things like Qur’an reading, Qur’an memorization, dhikr, awrad, and make up prayers or nawafil. Crafting a realistic daily routine ahead of time helps you to set achievable goals and avoid burn out or inconsistency throughout the the month.

4. Mushaf Marker

A simple app dedicated solely to being a bookmark for your Qur’an reading. Throughout the month of Ramadan, we will be taking every opportunity to read from the Book of Allah. We may read from our mushaf at home, we may pick up a mushaf at the masjid, or we may even read on our phones. The point of mushaf marker is to always have handy where you last left off in your recitation so that you can easily continue no matter where you are. You can input by surah name and verse number, or by entering the page number (madinah uthmani print).

This one is a little biased, since it’s our app, but if it sounds beneficial I hope you check it out! Unfortunately it is only available for IOS at the moment.
